The Traveling Warehouse
The Traveling Warehouse is both a place and an event. It proposes a humble approach to design where architecture recedes into the background, supporting interactions between people and their environment. From standard industrial selves to draped rolls of yet uncut fabric, the design simply rearranges common, borrowed materials to create a new public space. Visitors are free to linger, rest, converse, and perhaps encounter the unexpected.
The Traveling Warehouse is our second exhibition collaboration with CAMERICH, the Beijing-based furniture brand, continuing the exploration of zero-waste design. Over 98% of the materials used in the temporary pavilion are borrowed from and returned to the production lines and manufacturing spaces. This year, the pavilion’s materials are borrowed from Camerich’s R&D workshop - from the industrial shelves and factory lights to the fabric and timber panels used in prototypes. It shares an inside view of the furniture maker’s creative process and presents a vision for future manufacturing spaces as its new factory campus nears completion and enters production.
The Travelling Warehouse is a dynamic display of new furniture designed for a life in motion. Eight new pieces in over 48 color and material variations across 118 items are unboxed and presented over 4 days, showcasing the exploration of consistency and diversity across products. One new piece of furniture is unboxed every 10 minutes, changing the ensemble available for visitors to experience in person. The elevation storing all exhibited pieces transforms over time, becoming more transparent as boxes are opened to reveal the furniture inside - and also marking the passage of time.
