Table Room
For Eight

Exploring a new type of space for communal cooking and dining, the brief specified an interior space between 24-30sqm, with areas for eight people to cook and consume food, and a small bathroom. We conceived of a table-sized room (or a room-sized table) beginning at table height, for eight people to cook and eat, individually and together.

By re-composing the standard U, I, and L kitchen layouts, eight niches for cooking and eating share the same tabletop, physically separate but sensorially connected, each with a dedicated entrance. It is a gathering space for introverts who seek social contact at a comfortable distance.

A circular wall in plan encloses the space of the bathroom and a piece of the tabletop. Together with a high window, the occupant can participate in the table room’s collective experience while enjoying the necessary degree of privacy.
